Western Eco Systems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium‑size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for 3–4 full‑time temporary Field Supervisors to manage a team of biological field technicians that will be investigating the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at operational wind facilities throughout Iowa, starting May 2026 through October 31, 2026, with one position possibly extending to May 2027.

Job Summary:
  • Able to work independently as well as in team settings with the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with a crew of up to six technicians.
  • Skilled in identifying regional birds and bats by sight, experienced working in adverse weather conditions, and navigating rough terrain.
  • Well organized, with the ability to electronically track and maintain data according to standardized protocols across various facilities, tracking systems, and databases.
Responsibilities include:
  • Supervise up to six biological field technicians surveying across multiple facilities.
  • Communicate with technicians using phone, text, and email, being available when crews are working (early mornings and late evenings).
  • Help train and coach new field technicians on gear and survey protocols.
  • Search designated plots beneath wind turbines for bat and bird fatalities and collect data on tablets to measure sources of bias in fatality estimation; limited opportunities to conduct additional biological surveys.
  • Create schedules of searches and bias trials at each facility.
  • Assist in identifying birds or bats, conduct bias trials, and assist with fatality monitoring when necessary.
  • Review data summaries and photos daily to ensure quality data is being collected by field staff, providing corrections and guidance as necessary.
  • Maintain and track inventory of equipment, organization, and quality of data, and data summaries as requested.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred but not required.
  • Previous management experience and/or in‑field experience with regional wind projects preferred.
  • Advanced experience with macro‑photography, bat and bird identification for species in the region, and guides and keys for identification required.
  • Skilled use of electronics including computers, tablets, phones, GPS units, topographic maps, and compass required.
  • Organized, able to collect and manage data on a tablet and implement quality control measures for self and technicians.
  • Must work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, coordinators, technicians, clients, and landowners.
  • Must be able to appear for work on time; start times can be before sunrise and go as late as sunset.
  • Off‑road driver training will be provided, including a driving assessment.
