Safety & Security Officer Trainee

The Safety & Security Officer 1 / Trainee is responsible for maintaining safety and security, environmental health, and protection in the buildings and grounds at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center.

• Patrol and inspect assigned areas; ensure that areas are properly locked and secured.
• Conduct safety inspections of assigned areas and equipment for compliance with safety codes and regulations.
• Screen visitors and vehicles, issue temporary parking permits and badges.
• Transport or escort individuals, visitors, and employees on and off facility grounds.
• Respond to incidents and emergencies.

• High School diploma or equivalent (or higher degree) for candidates applying under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement – Statewide (NY HELPS) program.
• Competitive class appointment eligibility from outside or within State Service, including being on the current Safety & Security Officer Trainee 1 eligible list.
• One year of permanent competitive or 55‑b/55‑c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law for candidates from within State Service.
• Must successfully complete a 1 year traineeship and Academy Training mandated by the Municipal Police Training Council to advance to the full performance level.
• Background check required.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter; conditional licenses are not acceptable.
• Must be a resident of New York State and at least 18 years old.
• Must meet peace officer status requirements under State law.
• US citizenship required at the time of appointment.
• Physical and medical evaluation will be conducted to ensure ability to perform duties, with standards including height, weight, vision, hearing, and other health requirements.

• Safety & Security Officer Trainee (SG‑9): $46,921 – $57,901.
• Safety & Security Officer 1 (SG‑12): $55,012 – $67,564.
• Eligible for Mid‑Hudson Adjustment of $2,000.
