Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Plumbing/HVAC Technician is a versatile, multi-trade utility role designed to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all district facilities. While the primary focus of this position is the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial plumbing systems, the individual will also serve as a key mechanical support asset. This includes performing routine HVAC maintenance and directly assisting the Lead HVAC Technician on repairs, installations, and system diagnostics.

Position Requirements

The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature of the post and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

Plumbing Specialization (Approx. 60% of time)
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install all district commercial and residential plumbing systems, including water lines, sewer lines, gas piping, and storm drains.
  • Repair and replace commercial bathroom fixtures, flushometers, automatic faucets, drinking fountains, bottle-filling stations, and commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Maintain, service, and troubleshoot commercial water heaters, storage tanks, and circulating pumps.
  • Respond immediately to plumbing emergencies, including major leaks, main line blockages, and localized flooding.
  • Utilize specialized equipment such as drain augers, hydro-jetters, pipe locators, and inspection cameras safely and effectively.
  • Ensure all plumbing work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes.
HVAC & Mechanical Support (Approx. 30% of time)
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on HVAC systems independently, including replacing air filters, swapping belts, greasing bearings, and cleaning condenser/evaporator coils.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing hydronic heating systems, including boilers, unit ventilators, radiant loops, and associated control valves.
  • Utilize the district's Building Automation System (BAS) to monitor equipment performance, acknowledge alarms, and assist with basic system adjustments.
General Facilities & Electrical Support (Approx. 10% of time)
  • Perform minor electrical repairs related to mechanical equipment, such as disconnecting/reconnecting low-voltage control wiring, replacing fractional horsepower motors, and swapping out switches or fuses.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe mechanical rooms and workshops.
  • Document all work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, and hours accurately.
  • Assist with district-wide emergencies, including snow removal, storm cleanup, or critical facility failures as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the plumbing trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, building plans, and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose mechanical and minor electrical failures logically.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively as part of a small team and maintain a professional demeanor around students, staff, and the community.
  • Basic computer literacy to manage emails and digital work orders.
Qualifications & Requirements Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school training or completion of an apprenticeship program in plumbing is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of verifiable experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional plumbing maintenance.
  • Proven experience working as a "utility" or multi-trade technician with a demonstrable baseline understanding of HVAC and electrical systems.
Certifications & Licenses
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record (required for operating district vehicles).
  • Journeyman Plumbing License (required).
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (Preferred, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire).
