Job OverviewIllinois Department of Corrections seeks a candidate to serve as a Steamfitter at Hill Correctional Center. The role involves cleaning and replacing pipe fittings, repairing, installing, and maintaining high‑ and low‑pressure steam lines, repairing and maintaining refrigeration equipment/HVAC equipment, refrigerant piping, pneumatic piping, and controls for condensers and evaporators. The successful candidate will also supervise and train unskilled workers and individuals in custody while enforcing and maintaining security, safety, and custodial measures.
EssentialFunctions
- Performs the installation, preventive maintenance, and repairs on the facility's air handling units.
- Performs the installation, preventive maintenance, and repairs on the facility's refrigeration equipment, i.e., walk‑in freezers, walk‑in coolers, refrigeration units, ice machines, chillers, and cooling towers.
- Maintains, operates, installs, and repairs all hydronic boilers, low and high pressure steam boilers, pumps, PTAC units, air conditioning units, and associated HVAC equipment and duct and piping systems.
- Enforces and maintains security, safety, and custodial measures.
- Maintains and repairs the liquid transmission systems on the heating and air conditioning system.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman steamfitter.
- At least seven (7) years of experience installing, repairing, operating, and maintaining air handling equipment.
- At least seven (7) years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining refrigeration systems, including walk‑in coolers and freezers, ice machines, chillers, and cooling towers.
- At least seven (7) years of experience working with low‑ and high‑pressure steam systems, hydronic boilers, water heaters, and pumps.
- At least seven (7) years of experience operating and maintaining computer‑controlled Building Automation Systems (BAS) and pneumatic controls.
- At least seven (7) years of experience working with the tools, materials, methods, practices, and limitations of the trade.
- Completion of OSHA 10 or higher training.
- At least seven (7) years of experience applying the principles of the trade.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. Use of unauthorized drugs is prohibited.
- Must possess a valid certificate of a Universal Technician under USPEA Section 608.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes for digital enhancement, productivity, and transformation efforts within the department.
- This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
