Job Description Electronic Engineer Technician

North Central Correctional Facility - Rockwell City, Iowa

The Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) is looking for a skilled Electronic Engineer Technician to support the secure operation of the North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City.

This role is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the electronic systems that keep the facility safe and operational every day. From security cameras and electronic door controls to fire alarms and building automation systems, your work ensures that critical infrastructure functions reliably to support staff safety, facility security, and daily operations.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands‑on technical work, diagnosing complex systems, and solving real‑world problems in a mission‑driven environment. As part of the facility’s maintenance and operations team, you’ll help ensure that key security and building systems remain operational while also mentoring incarcerated individuals assisting with facility projects.

What You’ll Do Maintain Critical Security and Electronic Systems

Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of electronic and microprocessor‑based equipment.

Maintain And Service Key Facility Systems Including
  • Security cameras and recording equipment
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Perimeter fence alarms
  • Electronic gate and door locking systems
  • Public address and intercom systems
  • Staff telephone and two‑way radio systems
  • Inmate telephone and television systems
  • CCTV and media center systems

Use diagnostic tools such as digital voltmeters, oscilloscopes, frequency counters, and other testing equipment to identify and resolve issues.

Schedule and monitor required testing of facility systems, including work performed by contracted vendors.

Install and Upgrade Electronic Infrastructure

Install and terminate wiring and fiber optic systems for electronic security and facility controls.

Develop and maintain wiring diagrams, schematics, and documentation for newly installed equipment.

Assist with installation and configuration of systems controlling security, environmental controls, and life‑safety equipment.

Support Electrical and Mechanical Systems

Assist with installation and maintenance of electrical infrastructure including conduits, panels, control devices, motors, and equipment.

Perform preventative maintenance on motors, pumps, blowers, and other electrically driven machinery.

Troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment using diagnostic tools to locate and repair faults.

Operate Building Automation and HVAC Systems

Monitor and maintain building automation systems to support facility heating, ventilation, and air conditioning operations.

Use Siemens Insight software to monitor system performance, confirm settings in the field, and optimize building efficiency.

Troubleshoot and maintain components of air handling units, heating equipment, air conditioners, and refrigeration systems.

Test and maintain boilers, including monitoring chemical balance and safety controls.

Provide Technical Guidance and Training

Supervise and guide incarcerated individuals assisting with facility maintenance work.

Train designated staff on the operation and basic maintenance of electronic systems.

Develop written documentation and operating manuals for facility systems.

Maintain Documentation and Inventory

Develop preventative maintenance procedures and schedules.

Maintain parts inventory necessary for equipment repair and maintenance.

Complete reports and documentation consistent with institutional policies and procedures.
