Communications Technician

- Job Description

The Communications Technician is responsible for the installation, termination, and support of low-voltage and structured cabling systems in commercial environments. This role includes installing work area outlets in floors, walls, and modular furniture; pulling and routing cable through walls, ceilings, and furniture systems; and preparing cabling for termination by organizing, dressing, labeling, and managing proper cable slack.

Technicians will install and support cable infrastructure using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems while ensuring installations meet industry standards and project specifications. Additional responsibilities include building telecommunications closets, mounting backboards, installing racks, patch panels, cross-connects, fiber optic components, and related hardware, as well as performing rack and equipment grounding.

The role also requires performing fire-stopping procedures, installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves and core penetrations, and terminating low-voltage devices. Technicians must be able to interpret blueprints, project drawings, specifications, and quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.

Qualifications

+ Experience working in commercial construction or telecommunications environments.

+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints, project documentation, specifications, and quality standards.

+ Self-motivated, professional, and team-oriented with a strong focus on safety and process improvement.

+ Comfortable working indoors and outdoors, at heights, from ladders, and in confined spaces.

+ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.

+ Ability to distinguish colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals.

+ Willingness to travel within local and regional territories as needed.

+ Commitment to promoting a positive company culture and maintaining strong relationships with clients, vendors, and business partners.

Experience Level: Intermediate (2+ years of structured cabling or low-voltage installation experience preferred)

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Fairfax, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
