Job Description

Iowa Valley CSD is located in Marengo, which is 15 minutes north of I-80 and approx. 30 miles west of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor.

Ideal candidates like kids and can focus among their noise. A clear driving record is appreciated.

There may also be an opportunity to substitute drive or pick up activity routes. These items can be discussed during the interview.

A substitute school bus driver’s job involves safely transporting students to and from school and activities, following traffic laws, and performing pre‑ and post‑trip bus inspections.

Key duties include maintaining student discipline, communicating with the transportation director and other personnel, and assisting students with disabilities. Substitute drivers must be flexible and reliable for on‑call work.

Core Responsibilities
  • Safe transportation
    :
    Operate a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to school, athletic events, and other school‑related activities.
  • Adherence to laws and routes
    :
    Obey all traffic laws and regulations, and follow designated routes and time schedules accurately.
  • Vehicle maintenance
    :
    Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of the bus to check for mechanical issues like tires, lights, and fluids. Report any necessary repairs promptly.
  • Student management
    :
    Maintain discipline among students, report unruly behavior to the proper authority, and ensure students get on and off the bus safely.
  • Student assistance
    :
    Assist students with disabilities as they board and exit the bus, and ensure they are properly secured.
  • Communication
    :
    Use a two‑way radio or phone to communicate with the office, report delays, or address any issues that arise on the route.
  • Reporting
    :
    Complete and submit required reports, such as passenger counts or incident reports.
  • Emergency preparedness
    :
    Evacuate the bus in case of an emergency and be prepared to perform basic roadside assistance.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement.
  • Must pass required background checks and maintain all necessary certifications and training.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential due to the on‑call nature of the position.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and friendly demeanor.
