Position Overview
Smithfield is offering a CDL training program for new drivers. The role includes a 5‑7 week training period with pay up to $21.75 per hour during that period. You will deliver feed, load and unload animals, and operate a tractor‑trailer using a Class A CDL.
Responsibilities- Complete the 5‑7 week training program successfully.
- Follow all safety procedures while driving, delivering feed, or performing loading and unloading operations, prioritizing animal welfare.
- Comply with all DOT rules and regulations and with the rules of the receiving agent.
- Report all accidents promptly to the proper authorities.
- Perform any additional duties assigned as needed.
- High school diploma or GED (preferred).
- Current Class A CDL or permit.
- Previous driving experience preferred.
- Minimum age 21 years.
- Acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card upon hire.
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Hooking and backing a trailer to a tractor, raising and lowering landing gear, and operating manual transmission.
- Performing pre‑trip inspections, climbing into the engine area, and handling tight access situations such as fuel islands and cab entry.
- Opening and closing trailer gates and doors to load and unload animals.
- Reporting farm or plant issues via the swine movement ticket or farm condition report.
- Understanding and utilizing the emergency notification process.
