Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Director of Transportation and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WVBE Policy 5314, and Pocahontas County Schools Policy 4220.

Non-Exempt

In accordance with the substitute service personnel pay schedule established by the Pocahontas County Board of Education.

On an as-needed basis during the school year and summer months, as assigned.

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8, a Mechanic is a service employee who independently performs skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, school buses, trucks, and other mechanical and mobile equipment utilized by the county school system.

The Substitute Mechanic provides temporary maintenance and repair services during the absence of a regularly assigned mechanic. The employee assists in maintaining school buses, district vehicles, and related equipment in a safe and operational condition. Assignments may include routine maintenance, vehicle inspections, minor and major repairs, emergency road service, and transportation support activities.

The Substitute Mechanic may also serve as an emergency substitute bus operator when appropriately licensed and assigned.

• High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate as required by WV Code §18A-2-5.
• Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state-prescribed examination pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e.
• Valid West Virginia Driver's License.
• Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements, or obtain the required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
• Must successfully complete and maintain all requirements applicable to CDL holders, including medical certification and participation in required drug and alcohol testing programs.
• Ability to qualify as an emergency substitute bus operator in accordance with county, state, and federal requirements.
• Criminal background check and drug testing as required by law and transportation regulations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle maintenance, repair procedures, diagnostic techniques, and shop safety practices.
• Ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on school buses, automobiles, trucks, and other county-owned vehicles and equipment.
• Inspect vehicles to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
• Assist with diagnosing mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, and other vehicle system issues.
• Perform oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, tire service, and other preventative maintenance tasks.
• Replace and repair vehicle components as assigned.
• Assist with preparing vehicles for state inspections and maintaining transportation safety standards.

• Provide emergency road service and assistance for disabled vehicles as assigned.
• Assist with vehicle transportation and delivery activities.
• Operate district vehicles as necessary and when appropriately licensed.
• Serve as an emergency substitute bus operator when assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.

• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
• Assist with recording repairs, maintenance activities, labor, and parts used.
• Report parts, supply, and equipment needs to the Chief Mechanic or Supervisor of Transportation.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation as required.
