Associated British Ports (ABP) is the UK's largest ports operator, handling around a quarter of the nation's seaborne trade. We are looking for a skilled Electrical Technician to join our Engineering team at the Port of Ipswich, helping to maintain the critical infrastructure and equipment that keeps our operations moving safely and efficiently.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced electrical professional who enjoys working on heavy industrial plant and equipment, solving problems, and contributing to the success of a busy operational environment.

The Role

Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, you will be responsible for the maintenance, fault finding, repair and servicing of port plant and equipment. You'll play a vital role in ensuring operational reliability whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance and performance.

The role is primarily based in Ipswich, although occasional travel to other East Anglia locations may be required. Shifts are as follows:
Week 1 – Monday to Thursday: 0600 – 1400, Friday 0600 – 1300. Week 2 – Monday to Thursday: 1400 – 2200, Friday 1300 – 2000.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive electrical maintenance on port plant and equipment.
  • Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to minimise operational downtime.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in compliance with company procedures, legislation and safe systems of work.
  • Support operational teams by maintaining the availability and reliability of engineering assets.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, safe working practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide support and guidance to apprentices and semi-skilled engineering colleagues where required.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and communicate progress effectively with supervisors and stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A recognised electrical engineering qualification such as City & Guilds, ONC, HNC or equivalent.
  • Time-served experience as an Electrical Technician or Electrical Engineer.
  • Experience working in an industrial engineering environment with heavy plant, cranes, conveyor systems or similar equipment.
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and maintenance skills.
  • A solid understanding of Health & Safety legislation, risk assessments and hazard awareness.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A proactive, problem-solving approach.
  • A full UK driving licence.

The following would be advantageous:

  • BS7671 Electrical Qualification.
  • Experience operating plant and equipment.
  • Knowledge of port operations or maritime environments.
  • Experience working to tight operational deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing priorities and unplanned breakdowns.
