Salary: $15.49 – $18.22 per hour (FTE)
SummaryThe primary responsibility of this temporary position is to provide Supplemental Instruction for Introduction to Chemistry students at the Bay College Iron Mountain campus. SI is an internationally recognized academic support program targeting difficult courses. Students gather in study sessions to compare notes, discuss course materials, develop study tools, practice problem solving, and prepare for exams, facilitated by trained SI Leaders who prepare materials.
Responsibilities- Attend training prior to semester start.
- Attend all scheduled class sessions.
- Plan for each SI session held.
- Hold two one‑hour SI sessions each week.
- Hold three office hours throughout the week to enhance SI session planning and provide services to students.
- Meet with the course instructor weekly to ensure accuracy and relevancy of the SI session material.
- Meet with the SI Manager weekly during the semester to assess and enhance the effectiveness of the SI sessions through continuous improvement protocols.
- Take notes and complete all assignments and readings for the course.
- Advertise SI to students.
- Take attendance at each SI session and report weekly attendance to the instructor and semester attendance to the SI Manager.
- Utilize session planning forms to prepare organized, effective SI sessions.
- Create a comfortable and supportive learning environment during the SI sessions.
- Teach study skills and use collaborative learning techniques to help students master course material.
- Administer and record data for SI evaluation surveys.
- Mentor and advise students on ancillary topics such as referring them to other needed support services within the college.
- Attend regular training sessions provided by college staff.
- Provide services to students utilizing the Student Success Center during office hours.
- Any other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated competence (at least an A–) in CHEM 102, Introduction to Chemistry or a comparable course.
- Completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework.
- Strong foundation in chemistry.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Tutoring experience.
- BS/BA in chemistry or related field.
- Experience in Supplemental Instruction.
- Teaching experience.
The SI leader must be available to attend lecture and hold SI sessions at the following times:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 AM – 1:50 PM CT and Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:50 PM CT.
Works under the general supervision of the Academic Support Coordinator.
Physical DemandsEmployee required to stand, walk, sit; use hands to handle objects; reach; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell; occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Visual requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral and depth vision.
