Job Summary
  • The Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to patients presenting with a wide range of acute, urgent, and emergent medical conditions in the Emergency Department.
  • The NP works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver efficient, high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments including history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing.
  • Diagnose and treat acute illnesses and injuries such as fractures, infections, cardiac events, respiratory distress, trauma, and other emergent conditions.
  • Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic tests such as labs, EKGs, imaging studies, and monitor patient progress.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, including medication prescriptions, procedures, and referrals to specialists as necessary.
  • Provide wound care, suturing, splinting, and other emergency procedures within NP scope of practice.
  • Stabilize patients in critical condition and initiate emergency interventions as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, follow-up care, and preventive health.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care and disposition decisions (admission, discharge, or transfer).
  • Stay current with emergency medicine best practices and continuing education requirements.
Qualifications
  • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • If APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, a master’s degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in Emergency Medicine or acute care settings strongly preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by State).
  • National board certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care (AGACNP-BC) or (ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC); additional certifications (Family NP-C or FNP-BC) require approval.
  • Obtains and maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
  • Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation exists.
