General Statement of JobThis seasonal/summer help position is a manual and semi-skilled work position involved in a variety of public works maintenance activities. The individual in this position will report to the assigned Crew Supervisor. The duties include, but are not limited to, pothole patching, flagging, asphalt or concrete work, painting curbs, striping roads, mowing grass or trimming brush.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintains and services equipment such as walk around, checking oil, checking tire pressure, changing oil and filters, changing tires, etc.
- Completes weekly time sheets.
- Assists with the responsibility for work area safety such as placement of signs, etc.
- Performs minor building maintenance.
- Repairs storm damage to roads as needed.
- Maintains drainage and ditch lines.
- Shovels and cleans culverts.
- Operates and maintains a variety of lawn mowing equipment.
- Reports road hazards to supervisor.
- Performs traffic control.
- Performs the removal of dead animals on the roads and right of ways.
- Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as timesheets, equipment maintenance report.
- Refers to equipment maintenance manuals, policy and procedure manuals.
- Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, concrete saw, chain saw, shovel, rakes, mechanic tools, carpenter tools, asphalt/concrete tools, broom, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as dirt, pipe, concrete/asphalt, salt, lumber, cold mix, hot mix, fuel, road materials, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Crew Leader, Assistant Road Superintendent, Road Superintendent, co-workers, contractors, Scale Operators, businesses, truck drivers, and the general public.
- Assists with other related duties as needed or assigned.
- Assists with culvert pipe installation (cross road and driveway).
- Sets concrete forms; places and finishes concrete.
- Finishes landscape and yard work such as finish grade, seeding, mulching, etc.
- Performs tree removal.
- Performs crack sealing such as cleaning cracks, filling cracks with sealant, etc.
- Patches potholes with cold mix material by hand.
- Saws asphalt roads to prepare for patching.
- Assists with driveway approach replacements.
- Repairs failed areas on chip seal roads for purpose of resealing.
- Mills joints for the purpose of asphalt overlay.
- Repairs low shoulders and drop offs by mailboxes.
- Hauls rock on gravel roads as needed.
- Installs and makes signs.
- Stakes locations for sign placement.
- Performs the striping of roads.
- Performs the removal of brush on right of way.
- Performs the inspection of fire extinguishers.
- Inspects and restocks first aid kits and medical cabinets.
- Performs core drilling on County roads.

Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented with one to two years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Language SkillsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence, accident reports, time sheets, and maintenance checks. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to the public, supervisors and other employees of Cole County Public Works Department.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
