Who We Are

Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation's top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs.

It is located in one of the world's safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County's second-largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide.

As the largest academic unit by undergraduate student enrollment, Social Sciences plays an outsized role in the success of the campus. As one of the most diverse schools, in terms of demographics and disciplinary specializations (with writing labs and wet labs), Social Sciences is also central to UC Irvine's pursuit of academic and research excellence. Its top-ranked departments and award‑winning faculty and students drive UC Irvine's mission of being a Research‑1 university where the best and brightest come together to create positive change in societies, economies and for human well‑being.

Passion and purpose drive all that we do. From our outstanding students, alumni and community collective to our distinguished faculty and staff, we are the wave makers and mold breakers—the people who aren't afraid to forge new pathways, pursue new programs, and break with tradition in search of solutions that create positive change.

Our students are encouraged to question the norm, and seek out new solutions to pressing social problems through faculty‑supported research. We foster an interdisciplinary approach through collaborative work among our nine academic departments, 24 degree programs, and numerous research centers and facilities, many of which are used by other stakeholders across the campus, from medicine to the arts.
