SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Embedded Tutors (ET) attend weekly class meetings to provide additional support to students in their assigned course sections, both inside and outside the classroom. Tutors work closely with the instructor, serving as co‑facilitators and model students. This position is not open to current SOCCCD adjunct instructors or lecturers.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES- Collaborate with the instructor to strengthen student success, recognize affective issues, and build classroom community.
- Assist students with understanding course content and solving problems.
- Model academic skills that students can emulate, such as engaging in discussions and using strategies for success.
- Host problem‑solving workshops for students to attend.
- Support the instructor in the classroom by facilitating activities for a diverse student population.
- Provide learning strategies and study skills to foster independent learning.
- Introduce students to tutoring benefits when opportunities are otherwise lacking.
- Attend initial training, monthly meetings, and occasional follow‑up trainings throughout the year.
Knowledge of:
- Strong organizational skills for tracking tutoring sessions and student progress.
- Deep understanding of the subject(s) being tutored.
- Instructional technologies and online platforms.
- Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Techniques to facilitate effective interaction with individuals and groups.
Ability to:
- Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Explain complex concepts clearly and concisely.
- Adhere to confidentiality practices under FERPA, ADA, and other relevant policies and regulations.
- Communicate clearly in oral and written English, using proper grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary; follow directions; and listen actively.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
- Show patience and empathy when working with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles, including sensitive handling of racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, academic, socio‑economic, and disability considerations.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion in resolving situations per established policies and procedures, recognizing scope of authority.
- Report on a regular, consistent basis as scheduled to the assigned job.
- Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the assigned area; enforce safe work practices and proper behavior policies.
- Participate in trainings, meetings, workshops, conferences, and diversity/equity/inclusion events; keep online coursework and mandatory certifications up to date as directed by supervisor.
- Mandatory: Completion of the relevant course or an approved relevant course for tuition eligibility.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Desire to enter the field of teaching and/or science.
- Desire to tutor or instruct students.
- Experience working in a tutoring center or success center.
Work is primarily in a standard classroom or office setting. Duties require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, and light to moderate lifting. Use of a computer keyboard and verbal communication are common. Vision and hearing must be within normal ranges, with or without correction.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONSShort‑term, temporary hourly Non‑Bargaining Unit (NBU) assignment, not to exceed 160 days and 960 hours per fiscal year. Work schedule varies; hours per week up to 20. Employment is at‑will, with potential changes at any time. NBU employees are paid monthly.
