Position: Staff Electrical Engineer

Overview

JOB SUMMARY: The Staff Electrical Engineer is a senior technical contributor who leads the electrical and electromechanical design of medical devices throughout the full product lifecycle. This role owns key design decisions and provides technical leadership to deliver compliant, reliable, and manufacturable electrical systems that meet product, clinical, and business requirements. The position operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, balancing innovation with regulatory compliance, reliability, manufacturability, and commercial execution.

Responsibilities
  • Concept Innovation and Technical Risk Reduction: Lead and contribute to early-stage concept development, feasibility studies, and rapid prototyping to evaluate new product ideas and technology options.
  • Electrical Architecture and Design Execution: Architect and design analog, digital, and power electronic systems for medical devices, from concept through commercialization. Own the design of battery-powered and portable systems, including battery chemistry selection, charging, protection, and power management. Develop and integrate brushless DC (BLDC) motor control electronics, including motor drivers, sensing/feedback, and system integration. Lead schematic capture, component selection, and PCB design oversight, ensuring robustness, safety, and compliance.
  • Embedded Systems and

    Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Serve as the primary electrical partner to firmware engineers, defining hardware/firmware boundaries, interfaces, and debugging strategies. Support board bring-up, embedded system integration, and performance characterization. Collaborate closely with mechanical systems, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing teams to deliver cohesive, production-ready designs. Provide technical leadership and informal mentorship to engineers across disciplines.
  • Manufacturing, Sustaining, and Field Support: Support design transfer to manufacturing, including DFM/DFA reviews, test strategy development, and production ramp support. Partner with operations to resolve manufacturing issues, yield challenges, alternate component evaluations, and supplier-related technical problems. Provide technical support for field issues and reliability investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action implementation. Contribute to continuous improvement and next-generation product platforms.
  • Regulatory, Design Controls, and Compliance: Execute and guide development in compliance with medical device design controls, including requirements definition, traceability, and risk management. Lead or support UL, IEC, and electrical safety testing, including test preparation, execution support, and resolution of findings. Ensure designs meet applicable standards (e.g., IEC 60601, UL, ISO 13485, as applicable). Generate and review technical documentation supporting design reviews, V&V, and regulator submissions.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ownership of system-level electrical architecture for regulated commercial products.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in power electronics, battery-powered systems, and embedded hardware/firmware integration, including brushless DC motor systems.
  • Strong capability in analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including schematic capture, PCB layout oversight, and design verification using Altium or OrCAD.
  • Demonstrated experience designing electronics within reusable medical device environments, including application of design controls, risk management, and documentation practices.
  • Practical working knowledge of electrical safety and compliance standards, including UL, IEC/EN, IEC 60601, and familiarity with certification and compliance testing processes.
  • Experience supporting products through manufacturing transfer, sustaining engineering, and field issue resolution, including hands-on debugging and root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency with electronics simulation, test, and debug tools, and comfortable working directly with lab equipment and production hardware.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across electrical, mechanical, software, quality, regulatory, and operations teams, and to influence technical outcomes without direct authority.
  • Comfortably operating in environments with ambiguity and limited structure, applying a methodical, quality-driven approach to problem solving.
Education and Experience

A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, with a minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, preferably in design, development, and manufacturing of medical devices or other regulated industries.
