Job Summary
Principal Optical Systems Engineer – Irvine, CA
Responsibilities- Plan, conceptualize, design, test, and document complex, high‑precision opto‑mechanical / electro‑optical products.
- Develop new or modified designs for existing products and document changes from concept to production release.
- Interpret customer requirements and utilize industry best‑practice methods.
- Participate in feasibility studies and develop cost estimates for systems, testing, and development labor.
- Design and execute product verification tests.
- Diagnose issues in assemblies and final systems.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with project managers, optical, mechanical, electrical engineers, reliability, and manufacturing teams to achieve project objectives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or equivalent;
Master’s or PhD preferred. - 8+ years of experience developing optical systems.
- Experience creating and implementing test procedures and selecting appropriate instrumentation.
- Hands‑on experience assembling, aligning, and testing optical and electronic systems from component to system level.
- Deep understanding of state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing processes and metrology.
Office and laboratory work with regular cleanroom exposure. Requires wearing personal protective equipment and cleanroom garments. Must lift or move equipment up to 35 pounds. Laboratory noise levels may temporarily increase.
Travel RequirementsUp to 5–15% travel, including occasional international trips.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary range: $175,000 – $195,000 per year. Eligible for a discretionary annual bonus. Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, life and disability insurance, 12 paid holidays, sick time, 15 paid vacation days, fully paid parental leave, adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement, and participation in stock plans.
