Systems Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Position Summary & Critical Requirements
CRITICAL REQUIREMENT – NO TRANSFERABLE SKILLS ACCEPTED: This is a pure operations and lifecycle role that requires strict, direct experience as a dedicated Component Engineer, Parts Engineer, or Electronics/Hardware Lifecycle Management (LCM) Specialist within physical hardware manufacturing (Medical Device, Aerospace, or Defense).
Candidates with backgrounds primarily in high-level Manufacturing Engineering, Process/Assembly Line Engineering, Test/Equipment Validation (such as IQ/OQ/PQ protocols), or Supplier Quality Auditing will not be considered
. There is no transferable skill set for this position; you must have direct, proven experience sitting at the micro-level managing individual piece-parts, checking alternate part numbers, and managing components.
Our client is a privately held medical device innovator in Irvine, CA, dedicated to transforming patient care for those with kidney disease. They are developing a smart, portable, and highly versatile hemodialysis machine designed for home use and diverse care settings—eliminating the need for pre-mixed dialysate bags or external water-treatment systems.
Job OverviewWe are seeking a Component Engineer to provide targeted technical support during critical Design Verification Testing (DVT) and design release phases.
Operating as a vital technical liaison between Engineering, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing, this role focuses heavily on component risk reduction, material compliance, and documentation quality. This is not a product design position; rather, it is a high-impact operations role focused on ensuring that component selections are robust, compliant, and perfectly aligned with supplier capabilities prior to production release.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate component lifecycle status (NRND/EOL), track supplier risk, and ensure part availability.
- Identify long-lead-time items and collaborate with suppliers to establish viable cross-references and mitigation strategies.
- Support the release and tracking of both Off-The-Shelf (OTS) and custom parts.
- Ensure complete component specifications, approved sourcing, and environmental compliance documentation (REACH/RoHS).
- Leverage PLM and ERP systems to maintain seamless data alignment across platforms.
- Support traceability and audit readiness for pre-production stages.
- Review mechanical drawings for dimensional accuracy, GD&T (ASME Y14.5), and tolerance stack-up risks.
- Identify over-constrained tolerances and yield risks, providing actionable DFM/DFA feedback to the engineering team.
- Act as the primary interface between Design Engineering and Supply Chain Operations.
- Support supplier technical discussions and assist in resolving early production and build issues.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Supply Chain Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 5+ years of dedicated experience in component engineering, parts engineering, hardware lifecycle operations, or a technically focused component tracking role.
- Industry: Prior experience working in a regulated hardware manufacturing environment is required (Medical Device / ISO 13485 / FDA 21 CFR Part 820 preferred; Aerospace/Defense also accepted).
- Obsolescence Tools: Familiarity or hands-on experience tracking component life cycles using database software (e.g., Silicon Expert, Accuris, GIDEP).
- Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity or hands-on experience handling environmental compliance regulations, specifically REACH and RoHS.
- Technical
Skills:
Strong understanding of electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical component life cycles (Active, NRND, EOL). - Ability to perform fit, form, and function analysis from supplier datasheets to locate alternate components.
- Ability to read/critically review mechanical drawings and apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) principles.
- Systems: Familiarity with PLM systems (Propel, Windchill, or Teamcenter) and ERP systems (Net Suite preferred).
- Soft Skills: Exceptional cross-functional communication skills; ability to confidently interface between operations and design teams to mitigate supply chain risks.
