Location Profile: Headquartered in Irvine, CA, Shur-Lok manufactures fastening systems with superior locking devices for critical requirements including engine module assembly, structural assembly, rotor blade attachment, and aircraft engine shaft and spindle applications. Operations at the Irvine location include CNC Machining, Punch Press, Thread Rolling, Laser Marking, Heat Treating, NDT, and EDM.
Position SummaryYou'll spend the summer embedded in Shur-Lok's engineering department working on two initiatives that have real, lasting impact: digitizing decades of physical engineering records and completing the final push of a CAD database migration that retires a legacy enterprise system. When the summer is over, the archive and the migration don't disappear but become part of the permanent engineering infrastructure for an active aerospace manufacturer.
This is detail-oriented, methodical work. It's work that puts you inside a functioning engineering department, handling real production drawings and CAD data for certified aerospace components. If you're the type of person who takes satisfaction in bringing order to complexity and closing things out completely, this role is a good fit.
What You'll Do- Scan, organize, and index physical engineering documents (drawings, test reports, records) into a structured digital archive
- Validate scan quality and completeness; perform corrections and rescans as needed
- Migrate CAD files from a legacy Smar Team database into an active Solid Works PDM vault
- Verify migrated files for accuracy, completeness, and correct vault structure per defined procedures
- Flag discrepancies, missing files, or data integrity issues for engineering review
- Track and report your own progress against defined completion targets
- Work directly alongside engineers to resolve questions on document ownership, revision history, or file identification
- You'll work directly with engineers — not siloed in a separate intern program
- Your output is permanent: a completed archive and a retired legacy system are tangible deliverables
- Early exposure to PDM/PLM systems and document control practices used across the aerospace industry
- Strong performers will be considered for longer-term co-op placement
- Freshman or sophomore pursuing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field
- Detail-oriented and methodical — you follow procedures carefully and escalate when something doesn't look right
- Comfortable with computer-based tools and file systems; CAD or PDM familiarity is a plus, not a requirement
- Able to work independently and track your own progress without constant oversight
- S. Person or ability to obtain export authorization
- Available full-time (40 hrs/week) for the duration of the summer term
