Position:
Lead Wastewater Process Engineer (Staff), Full‑time, Relocation eligible, No visa sponsorship.

The Opportunity

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as a technical specialist in conventional wastewater treatment processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed‑film processes, membrane bioreactors (M ), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, and disinfection.
  • Lead a process team and provide technical guidance, supervising engineering staff on projects and collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Develop and apply process models, mass‑balance calculations, design criteria, trade‑off studies, and master‑planning studies for multiple projects.
  • Perform applied research, including bench, pilot, and full‑scale testing, and integrate data into process models.
  • Recommend appropriate treatment processes, equipment, and materials selections.
  • Collect, assimilate, analyze, and manage data for process modeling and design work.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and other engineering deliverables.
Client Focus
  • Identify key client interests and drivers, and communicate these to project teams.
  • Develop creative solutions that align with client goals.
  • Support business development activities, including pre‑positioning meetings, proposal development, and client interviews.
  • Present on state‑of‑the‑art wastewater treatment projects at conferences.
People Management
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster knowledge management.
  • Assist with performance management and recognition of junior staff.
  • Participate in career development planning and training for junior staff.
Engineering Standards & Quality
  • Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment.
  • Advise on compliance with the Black & Veatch quality program and related guidance.
  • Coordinate continuous improvement and change management efforts on projects.
Resource Management
  • Implement resource management strategies and manage engineering resources for small groups.
Administrative
  • Ensure effective implementation of policies, procedures, and processes for the workgroup.
  • Oversee adherence to corporate and division programs.
  • Approve expense reports if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering.
  • 10+ years of wastewater treatment experience, with at least 5 years in water quality and treatment.
  • Advanced knowledge of municipal wastewater process design and related design guides and standards.
  • Experience with modern process simulators such as Bio Win, GPS‑X, Sumo, or Simba.
  • Strong leadership skills and understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development.
  • Effective written and oral communication; priority setting; delegation; conflict management; and team building.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum 11 years of related work experience.
  • Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements including background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle records search.
Certifications

Professional engineering license in any US state or ability to obtain one within 2 years of employment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment.
  • Typical office and construction environments, extreme weather, high noise, safety hazards, and exposure to chemicals.
  • Physical requirements include sitting, walking, talking, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
