POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the design, development, and testing of induction and permanent-magnet motors used in fans, pumps, and compressors, requiring innovative engineering solutions to enhance new-product performance and reliability. The successful candidate will apply strong fundamentals in electromechanical engineering, analytical expertise, and a collaborative mindset to support our customers' needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supports the department's Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the sizing, design, mechanical drawings, and testing of electric motors operating at speeds up to 70,000 rpm used in our fans, pumps, and compressors.
- Performs electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analysis using simulation tools (FEA/CFD).
- Creates detailed CAD models, drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
- Develops motor performance specifications and validation test plans.
- Conducts performance testing (efficiency, torque, speed, thermal, vibration, noise).
- Analyzes and optimizes motor efficiency.
- Works closely with manufacturing to ensure design for manufacturability.
- Solves problems related to the assembly, repair, and testing of development and production hardware.
- Works with colleagues in the department and in other departments.
- Writes reports as required.
- Presents designs to peers, other engineers, and customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical, Electrical, or a related technical discipline from an accredited college or university required. 3 to 5 years of experience in electric motor design and development. Strong knowledge of electromagnetic theory and motor design principles. Experience with motor simulation tools. Hands-on experience with motor teardown. Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, Autodesk Inventor) Understanding of winding techniques, lamination stacks, magnets, and insulation systems.
Familiarity with motor manufacturing processes and materials. Ability to interpret and create detailed engineering drawings applying ASME Y14.5M. Works under constant supervision. Performs assignments of mild complexity and assists other Engineers. Must have knowledge of drawing and drafting standards. Experience in developing military or aerospace equipment is a strong plus. Understanding of military, environmental, and test specifications is a plus.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Hands-on test and hardware experience is required. General machine shop experience is a plus.
