Position: Sr. Staff Engineer (Electrical)

Orth Align, Inc., a Smart Technologies, growing medical device company, has an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer. This role is responsible, primarily, for the development of electrical systems and components for medical devices, ensuring their performance, reliability, and compliance with industry standards. The Sr. Staff Engineer provides cross-functional technical leadership, mentorship and drives the electrical design, architecture and integration of embedded medical products.

This position reports daily to our headquarters in Irvine, CA; this is not a remote position.

You will:
  • Lead the electrical design and development of medical devices, including power systems, sensors, digital circuits, and connectivity solutions.
  • Select appropriate components and materials based on performance, safety, regulatory, and cost requirements.
  • Develop electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and detailed documentation for designs.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and software developers to integrate electrical designs with the overall device architecture.
  • Lead electrical testing and validation, integration testing, and environmental testing.
  • Support product qualification to required standards (e.g., IEC 60601) and pass performance, safety, and reliability tests.
  • Analyze failures and determine root cause/corrective actions.
  • Work closely with Quality and Sustaining Engineering, Production, R&D, and Manufacturing Engineering to resolve design and process issues.
  • Partner with electronics suppliers and distributors to implement new designs, resolve component lifecycle issues, and stay up to date with the latest products.
  • Support end of life component replacement activities for electrical components.
  • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, foster technical growth and maintain high engineering standards.
  • Lead or participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions to ensure the quality of electrical design and system integration.
  • Own the architecture, design, and development of electrical systems, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Perform in-depth analysis and optimization of electrical designs to ensure robustness, performance, and efficiency.
  • Drive innovation by identifying new electrical design approaches, techniques, and technologies that could improve product performance or reduce cost.
You need:
  • An advanced 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering
  • At least 4 years' of experience, preferably in a manufacturing medical device environment
  • Experience using Altium and/or various PCB layout tools preferred - Schematic capture, PCB layout and fabrication
  • Knowledge of DC/DC converters, sensor interfaces, filtering techniques, Embedded systems architecture, Digital and Analog circuit design, Battery powered applications
  • Knowledge of various communications protocols such as I2C, UART, SPI, USB, MIPI
  • Proficiency using oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and other testing equipment to measure and validate circuit performance and troubleshoot issues
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, including component sourcing, assembly techniques, soldering, and quality control standards
  • Knowledge of EMC principles and practices to ensure compliance with EMI and EMS standards is a plus
  • Knowledge of IEC-60601 standards is a plus
  • Experience with accelerometers and gyroscopes is a plus
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member as well as independently
  • Excellent attention to detail, producing high quality output
  • Flexibility and strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Must be results oriented, demonstrate passion, a sense of urgency, and determination for success
  • Ability to apply sound judgment when making decisions and communicating with peers and management

    Must be able to learn, apply, and communicate technical product information/requirements
