Our client, a construction company is seeking a Senior Accountant onsite in their Irvine location.
Core Responsibilities- 1. Financial Reporting & General Ledger Management
- Month-End Close:
Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations are completed by the 6th business day. - Balance Sheet Integrity:
Perform monthly reconciliations for all bank accounts, credit lines, asset and liability accounts - Financial Statements:
Assist the CFO in preparing monthly P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements for executive review. - Audit Management:
Act as the lead "audit-ready" coordinator for external CPA reviews, worker’s compensation audits, and Union Trust Fund audits.
- 2. WIP & Project Accounting Oversight
- Revenue Recognition:
Maintain the master Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedule. Calculate earned revenue using the Percentage of Completion (POC) method. - Over/Under Billing Analysis:
Identify and reconcile "Billings in Excess of Costs" and "Costs in Excess of Billings" monthly to ensure balance sheet accuracy. - Profit Fade Analysis:
Monitor project budgets against actuals; alert the CFO and Project Managers of any significant margin erosion or "profit fade." - Change Order Accounting:
Ensure all approved change orders are correctly integrated into the contract value and budget in the ERP.
- 3. Compliance & Risk Management (California & Union)
- Lien Law Stewardship:
Oversee the AR clerk to ensure 20-Day Preliminary Notices are filed for all projects and that the correct Conditional/Unconditional waivers are exchanged for every payment. - Tax Compliance:
Manage the preparation and filing of California Sales and Use Tax returns (CDTFA), ensuring correct tax treatment for material-only vs. labor-inclusive contracts.
- 4. Operational Supervision
- Process Oversight:
Supervise the data flow between the Receiving Clerk, AP Clerk, and AR Clerk to ensure the "Three-Way Match" (PO, Receiving Ticket, Invoice) is functioning. - Internal Controls:
Maintain and enforce rigorous internal controls to prevent fraud, duplicate payments, and unauthorized expenditures. - ERP Master Data:
Manage the Chart of Accounts and Job Cost structure within the ERP system (Syspro).
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. - Experience:
3+ years of progressive accounting experience strictly within the Construction/Contracting industry. - California Expertise:
Proven knowledge of California Mechanics Lien Laws and statutory waiver forms. - Technical
Skills:
Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (vLookups, Pivot Tables, Sum Ifs) and experience with construction-specific ERP software. - Communication:
Ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for non-financial Project Managers.
- Close Cycle:
Consistently closing books within 6 business days. - Audit Findings:
Zero material weaknesses or significant adjustments during annual CPA or Union audits. - WIP Accuracy:
Monthly variance between estimated and actual margins remains within a ±2% threshold on mature projects.
