Your Role on the Team
Supports the regulatory requirements of EHS Fire inspections, prevention activities, building surveys/inspections, fire drills, managing the Knox box® program, earthquake shut-off gas valve programs, and participating in Fire Safety training initiatives in all UCI buildings, parking structures and housing units. The role extends to coordinating special events programs, drafting reports for compliance with Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations, and responding to emergencies, including assisting in fire investigations under the direction of the Campus Fire Marshal.
Through coordination with key departments, this position provides Fire Safety Training and Special Event oversite utilizing a fire extinguisher simulator for hands-on training.
- Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.
- Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
- Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
- Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
- Knowledge of California Fire Code, California Code of Regulations Title 19, Public Safety, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards
- Respond to periodic assignments and emergency callbacks outside of normal working hours.
- Working knowledge of modern fire prevention and protection principles, practice and standards.
- Knowledge and skill in the application and interpretation of applicable state and federal laws and regulations including the Health and Safety Code, CCR Title 19 and 24, Uniform Building Code, Uniform Fire Code and NFPA standards.
- Ability to verbally communicate with various audiences during Special Event Meetings and Walk throughs to effect approved plan compliance.
- Bachelor s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in the safety field with general understanding and knowledge of fire prevention
- Required to hold a valid drivers license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
- Work outside normal business hours on occasion in support of construction activities, testing schedules, special events (Concerts, sporting events, lectures), etc.
- Responds to emergencies at any time as required by the University Police, Campus Departments or the EH&S-ERT and takes appropriate action.
- Must pass fire prevention coursework & certifications as prescribed.
- Respond to periodic assignments and emergency callbacks outside of normal working hours
- Function as support in emergency situations which may involve exposure to fire and/ or natural disaster scenes.
