About UCIPD

The University of California, Irvine Police Department (UCIPD) is a full‑service, 24‑hour law‑enforcement agency that serves a daily population of more than 65,000 people across the UCI campus, UCI Health, and surrounding communities. UCIPD provides patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, community engagement, crime prevention, emergency management, and general public‑safety services. As a designated 9‑1‑1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), UCIPD is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency calls and coordinating responses to police, fire, and medical emergencies.

Role on the Team Entry Level Police Officer

Under the direction of a Police Sergeant or Field Training Officer (FTO), the Entry‑Level Police Officer serves in an apprentice capacity. Incumbents are currently attending or have graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Basic Academy training program, but have not received a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.

Lateral Police Officer

A Lateral Police Officer classification represents a journey‑level position. Incumbents have completed the California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy, received a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate, and have been or are currently employed by a law‑enforcement agency within two years of the date of application.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducting foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of the UC properties.
  • Investigating crimes and traffic collisions, preparing detailed reports, issuing citations and making arrests.
  • Providing crime‑prevention education and serving as proactive partners within a diverse community.
  • Maintaining professionalism and adherence to department rules, university policies, and state and federal laws.
  • Ensuring proper care, maintenance, and operation of assigned facilities, vehicles, equipment, and materials.
  • Supporting morale, teamwork, and the department's mission through professional conduct and effective communication.
  • Officers may also be assigned to support special events, athletic events, or security details, and collaborate with other agencies.
  • Specialized assignment opportunities include the System Wide Response Team (SRT), K9 unit, bicycle patrol, field training officer, detective, corporal, and specialized instructor roles.
Professional Standards and Core Competencies

Sworn personnel must maintain compliance with training and certification requirements established by California P.O.S.T.
