Your Role on the Team

The role of Behavioral Health Counselor is to provide support to (unit) at UCI’s Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CAND). The BEH Health Counselor will work under the direction of the assigned BEH Manager. The position of the Behavioral Health Counselor will work under the general supervision of the Psychology Division Lead (Behavioral Health Manager) to support the overall objective of CAND.

The Behavioral Health Counselor has opportunities to provide direct clinical care to the pediatric and adolescent patients through short-term and long-term individual therapy, group therapy, parent training, family therapy, consultation, and related services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD), and other neurodevelopmental disorders. The Behavioral Health Counselor may provide training and consultative services to other professionals and health care trainees with opportunities to supervise trainees.

The Behavioral Health Counselor may also provide teaching and educational opportunities to families and other community agencies through workshops, classes, conference presentations and/or other formats. The Behavioral Health Counselor may be involved in community meetings and outreach working with a variety of individuals, such as educators, families, students, and community providers. When providing clinical effort towards a research project or grant, the Behavioral Health Counselor will work under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator for that effort.

The Behavioral Health Counselor will assist with additional duties as needed.

Required What It Takes to be Successful
  • Clinical experience working with autistic individuals and individuals with other neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Specialized training and experience with working with individuals with complex psychological conditions including, but not limited to, disruptive behavior disorders, trauma, anxiety, and mood disorders
  • Must be comfortable providing therapeutic services in-person and telehealth with flexibility to work remotely to meet client and organizational needs
  • Supervised professional experience providing therapy to a pediatric psychology population is required.
  • Thorough knowledge associated with providing psychotherapy services.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough skills associated with conducting complex diagnosis, problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse client groups, members of the medical staff and faculty.
  • Trained in evidence-based clinical interventions, with a preference for experience with cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and/or mindfulness-based interventions, as well as group therapies in clinical populations.
