Your Role on the Team
The position of Nurse Practitioner PD in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit.
Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular. Duties will include consults and inpatient care and management, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics and creating a treatment plan, participating in inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off at the beginning and end of shift, rounding and communicating with the surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians, providing surgical consultations on potential surgical patients, participating in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU, coordinating procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures, etc.)
and follow‑up, admitting and discharging patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate, triaging phone calls from patients and nurses, reviewing critical labs, following up on results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patient health needs in a trauma‑informed manner. The nurse practitioner will identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients and demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and commitment to professional development and competency validation.
The nurse practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient setting and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. In addition, Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high‑quality patient care throughout surgical procedures. The NP professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and in all health‑licensed settings and affiliates.
The NP is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager. Functions as appropriate to their scope of practice (including management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Accepted privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include all privileges.
The NP has responsibility for standards of care for their specified patient population and evidences self‑direction and accountability to quality of care and to the development of their role within the U-Health locations and affiliates. Advanced Practice Practitioners are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
Required:
- Two years of experience as Nurse Practitioner to support setting and patient population.
- Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
