Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner PD in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit.

Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.

Responsibilities include evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in inbound and outbound hand‑offs, rounding and communicating with surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians, conducting surgical consultations, participating in resuscitations, coordinating procedures and scheduling operations, following up on care, admitting and discharging patients, triaging phone calls, reviewing laboratory results, performing initial and daily physical examinations, exploring patient health needs, and managing hospitalized patients.

The NP will demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, sound judgment, communication skills, and stay compliant with documentation and professional development requirements. The NP will also provide multidisciplinary care coordination, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and physicians. Those with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team.

What It Takes to be Successful Required
  • Two years of experience as Nurse Practitioner.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges before hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Diplomatic and flexible interaction with physicians, nurses, and other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Clear communication skills, in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes. Maintain an appropriate work pace.
  • Skill, knowledge and ability essential to successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to be trained in use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of privacy, confidentiality and security policies related to Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Current active unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current active unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current active unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration. Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Minimum two years of Nurse Practitioner clinical experience.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications.
  • Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
  • Experience in Surgical Critical Care as NP.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Bi‑lingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
