The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will perform all duties under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist and may be assigned to the following shifts: 6:30 AM–7:00 PM; 9:00 AM–9:30 PM; 11:00 AM–11:30 PM, including weekends and holidays. Work will take place at both the Orange and Irvine campuses.

Under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, perform safe anesthesia care including pre‑operative assessment, pre‑op orders, administration of anesthetic techniques, patient monitoring intra‑operatively, safe intra‑op course and emergence, and assistance as necessary in post‑operative care.

  • Knowledge of current nursing, anesthesia and critical care techniques as evidenced by graduation from an accredited school of nursing, graduation from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia, valid California Registered Nurse license, valid California Nurse Anesthetist license, current certification by National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA), valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification by the American Heart Association
  • Skill in performing pre‑operative assessment including identification of pre‑existing disease, documentation of history, physical exam, labs, ECG and chest X‑ray
  • Understanding interactions of pre‑operative drug therapy with anesthetic plan and agents for all age groups and identification of abnormalities posing potential problems
  • Understanding medical indications for delay of elective surgery and for pre‑operative specialty consultation
  • Ability to explain anesthetic technique, alternatives, risks, and obtain informed consent
  • Ability to properly document anesthesia record, including pre‑operative, intra‑operative and postoperative events
  • Skill in determining patient monitoring modalities, including arterial lines and Swan Ganz pulmonary artery catheters, and in safely inserting venous and arterial lines under medical direction
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, dosage, side effects and contraindications of all anesthetic drugs used at UCI
  • Skill in monitored, regional and general anesthesia techniques for all age categories
  • Skill in recognizing adverse effects of anesthesia techniques and initiating emergency treatment, while informing attending anesthesiologist
  • Knowledge of cardiac, respiratory, neuro, endocrine and renal physiology related to intra‑operative events
  • Skill in airway management techniques, including safe insertion of nasal and oral airways, laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation
  • Skill in assessing appropriate level of anesthesia for each patient and procedural type, and ability to recognize safe emergence
  • Ability to recognize postoperative complications, initiate emergency treatment and document appropriately
  • Ability to assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency situations, including CPR, airway management, and insertion of monitoring lines
  • Ability to perform selected educational and supervisory tasks, including supervision of student anesthetists when assigned and assessment of orientation and progress
