Role context:
The Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Surgery, Division of Emergency General Surgery, will manage and coordinate inpatient care, assess health needs, plan and evaluate care, and work with residents, fellows and attending surgeons. The inpatient workload includes handoffs at shift changes, inpatient rounds, ED consults, and coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams. The NP will have an independent clinic on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and will triage calls for EGS patients through the clinic and call center.

Responsibilities
  • Assess health needs and plan, evaluate, and coordinate care for patients on the emergency general surgery service, including those in the surgical ICU, step-down, telemetry, and medical-surgical units.
  • Collaborate with residents, fellows, and attending surgeons; manage inbound and outbound handoffs; coordinate care with social work, case management, therapy, and other specialties.
  • Perform surgical consultations: assess indications for surgery and prepare patients for surgery; arrange and oversee procedures (including scheduling operations and interventional procedures) and follow-up; obtain consults as needed; admit and discharge patients with appropriate orders and documentation.
  • Review critical labs/imaging, follow-up results with patients and staff; obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform initial and periodic physical examinations.
  • Maintain professional development, ensure timely and compliant documentation, and demonstrate clinical judgment and communication skills.
  • Maintain independent clinic duties (Wednesday and Friday afternoons) for postoperative, some follow-up, and occasionally preoperative patients; triage calls related to EGS and coordinate through the clinic and call center.
  • Provide multi-disciplinary care coordination and facilitate patient throughput and hospitalization; remain knowledgeable in privacy and security policies related to PHI.
  • Function as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with credentialing and privileges to practice, under supervision and applicable policies.
Required Qualifications
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license;
    California Nurse Practitioner license;
    Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG).
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Two or more years of experience in the relevant setting and patient population.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across interdisciplinary teams; understanding of privacy, confidentiality, and PHI protection.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications; experience in Surgical Critical Care and acute care surgery.
  • Experience with surgical trainees; ability to function autonomously in clinic and on inpatient floors; familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
