Your Role on the Team
The position of Nurse Practitioner 2 in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at our new hospital in Irvine, California.
The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, and vascular.
Responsibilities- Consults and inpatient care and management, including evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, and creating treatment plans.
- Participate with inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off at the beginning and end of shift.
- Round and communicate with surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians.
- Perform surgical consultations on potential surgical patients.
- Assist in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU.
- Coordinate procedures, including scheduling operations and other procedures, and follow‑up.
- Admit and discharge patients, including admission history and physical, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications.
- Triage phone calls from patients and nurses, review critical labs, and follow‑up on results.
- Obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and explore patients’ health needs in a trauma‑informed manner.
- Identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients, demonstrating advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, and sound judgment.
- Provide professional communication and timely, compliant documentation.
- Participate in the comprehensive care of patients in inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.
- Assist in the operating room as an RNFA, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high‑quality patient care during procedures.
This Nurse Practitioner position is represented by the California Nurses Association union.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
- Exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
- Demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Communicate medical information clearly in person and over the telephone.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
- Maintain an appropriate work pace for the workload.
- Possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for PHI and other sensitive information.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- NP National Board Certification (AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- One or more years of experience as Nurse Practitioner supporting the setting and patient population.
- Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Experience in trauma/critical care nursing.
- Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
