Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner 2 in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at our new hospital in Irvine, California.

The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular.

Duties include consults and inpatient care and management, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating a treatment plan, participating in inpatient sign-out/hand-off at the beginning and end of shifts, rounding, communicating with surgical teams, residents, and attending physicians, performing surgical consultations on potential surgical patients, participating in resuscitations, coordinating procedures, scheduling operations, following up, admitting and discharging patients, triaging phone calls, reviewing critical labs, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and daily physical examinations and assessments, exploring patients’ health needs in a trauma‑informed manner, identifying, treating, and managing hospitalized patients, demonstrating advanced medical knowledge and clinical judgment, communicating professionally, documenting promptly and compliantly, and participating in professional development and competency validation.

Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team.

• Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
• Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
• Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
• Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
• Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
• Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
• Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
• Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
• Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
• Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
• Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration.
• Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
• NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
• Current BLS and ACLS certification.
• One or more years of experience as Nurse Practitioner to support setting and patient population.

• Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
• Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
• Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
