The position of Nurse Practitioner 2 in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent, yet team‑oriented individual who will manage the inpatient care of surgical patients at the new hospital in Irvine, California. The role involves general and specialty surgical services across all levels of care, including the ICU. Nursing patients may be from colorectal, ENT, general and gynecology, hand, minimally invasive, plastic, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, and vascular specialties.
Duties include, but are not limited to: evaluating and ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off, rounding with surgical teams, performing surgical consultations, resuscitating surgical patients from the ED and ICU, coordinating procedures (scheduling operations and other procedures), admitting and discharging patients, triaging phone calls, reviewing critical labs, obtaining comprehensive histories, performing initial and daily physical exams, and managing hospitalized patients.
The nurse practitioner demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge, sound judgment, professional communication, timely documentation, and participates in professional development and competency validation. RNFA credentials may allow assistance in the operating room with surgeons and the surgical team.
- Coordinate procedures and follow‑up, including scheduling and postoperative care.
- Admit and discharge patients with appropriate orders and documentation.
- Respond to critical labs and patient phone calls.
- Perform comprehensive assessments and trauma‑informed care.
- Provide multidisciplinary care coordination, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and physicians.
- Obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships across UCI Health System.
- Exercise diplomacy and flexibility with physicians, nurses, and other staff.
- Demonstrate customer service skills suitable for the role.
- Communicate medical information clearly in person and by phone.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to prepare clear reports.
- Maintain an appropriate work pace for the workload.
- Possess skills, knowledge, and ability essential to assigned duties.
- Be trained to use specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for PHI.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current, active, unrestricted prescribing license and DEA registration.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- NP National Board Certification (AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- At least one year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a similar setting.
- Familiarity with Windows and MS Office applications.
- Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
- Knowledge of UC policies and procedures.
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
