Supportive Oncology Nurse Practitioner Overview

UCI Health hematologic oncologists provide expert consultation and treatment for patients with many different types of cancer, including malignancies of the blood such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as solid tumor carcinomas such as colon, breast and prostate. Patients diagnosed with cancer typically need a range of medical specialists, treatments and services, all of which are available at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Orange County’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.

We also offer the only adult hematopoietic stem‑cell transplant services in Orange County, so patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers no longer need to travel long distances for this life‑saving treatment. Our oncologists are highly skilled in leading‑edge treatments and many also participate in clinical trials. We strive to provide the best possible care, tailored for each patient’s individual needs.

The center is recognized for delivering the highest quality care by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) II for Supportive Oncology within the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, is a highly skilled and compassionate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who plays an integral role in delivering comprehensive supportive care to oncology patients. Working under the supervision of the Medical Director(s) and APP Supervisor, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the NP will independently and collaboratively manage patients in the ambulatory setting.

This role focuses on enhancing quality of life for patients across the cancer care continuum by addressing symptom management, psychosocial needs, palliative care, and coordination of complex care plans. The NP will provide direct patient care, patient and family education, interdisciplinary care coordination, and communication with referring providers.

This position may perform:

• Functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice” (in general, this includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary.
• Approved privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL privileges.
• The NP professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates.
• The NP has responsibility for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidence self‑direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within all Health locations and affiliates.
• Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
• The NP is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.

  Adult and/or Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) patient populations.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
• Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
• Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
• Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
