Position: Nurse Practitioner, Surgery - Variable (Per Diem)

Your Role on the Team

Summary

The Nurse Practitioner PD in the Department of Surgery will manage and coordinate inpatient care for surgical patients primarily at a new hospital in Irvine, California. Duties span general surgery, specialty services, and intensive care. The role includes evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in hand‑offs, rounding, communicating with surgical teams, and conducting consultations. The NP will also manage admissions, discharges, triage phone calls, review critical labs, perform physical exams, and lead multidisciplinary care coordination.

Additional responsibilities involve collaborating with surgeons in the operating room for patients with RNFA credentials and contributing to professional development and competency validation. This position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

Responsibilities

• Conduct consults and inpatient care for surgical patients, including colorectal, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive, plastic surgery, oncology, thoracic, urology, and vascular services.

• Assess and manage surgical patients, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, and conducting initial and daily physical examinations.

• Participate in shift hand‑offs and maintain accurate documentation, ensuring timely and compliant records.

• Coordinate surgical procedures, including scheduling operations and performing follow‑ups, admissions, and discharges.

• Triage phone calls, review critical labs, and communicate patient status with medical staff.

• Collaborate with operating room teams when holding RNFA credentials, ensuring high‑quality patient care throughout procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner supporting the specified setting and patient population.
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Skill in establishing effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Diplomatic and flexible interaction with physicians, nurses, paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law‑enforcement officers.
  • Customer‑service orientation appropriate to the role.
  • Clear communication of medical information to diverse audiences, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in preparing clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes, maintaining an appropriate work pace.
  • Demonstrated essential skills, knowledge, and ability to perform assigned duties successfully.
  • Proficiency with specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Understanding and adherence to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies relating to PHI.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration; active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • At least two years of Nurse Practitioner clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience in trauma/critical care nursing.
  • Experience in surgical critical care as an NP.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Bi‑lingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
