Our lab is based in both the UCI School of Medicine and its Department of Emergency Medicine. Our work bridges researchers from across the U.S. as well as across University of California campuses to study traffic and transportation safety, motor vehicle driver behavior, socioecological factors that influence safe/risky driving behaviors, and related prevention policy. While our work is focused on traffic and road safety, most of our day-to-day work is focused on individual/population health, medicine, and primary as well as secondary prevention of motor vehicle crash injury.

Your Role on the TeamUnder the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Staff Research Associate (SRA) will be responsible for day-to-day operations of assigned data analysis for research projects and writing briefs and manuscripts related to research. The candidate will need to have experience of epidemiology and data science using statistical and analytical techniques/computer science and can ensure timelines are met. The person will conduct statistical analyses on the current and future research projects, and write up the research results into manuscripts, briefs, and grant applications.
The candidate will work with lab staff and students to further the research goals of the lab.
The ideal candidate will be extremely motivated, highly organized, and highly detail oriented. Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and greater than 3 years of epidemiology and data science research and/or work experience. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in current and emerging biostatistical and data science analytical techniques.
To successfully address these tasks on time, the SRA must have a broad set of intelligence, be extremely diligent and task-oriented, and an efficient worker. Excellent communication and writing skills are required.
The SRA will be supervised by the Principal Investigator, with the ultimate goal of progressive independence once the SRA has demonstrated the ability to carry out the PI and project related plans.
What It Takes to be SuccessfulRequired:
- Proficiency in hypothesis testing, including no mistakes in use of t-tests, regressions, ANOVA, mixed effects modeling, chi-square, and other common tests.
- Proficiency in writing the methods and results sections of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, including using proper grammar and syntax.
- Proficiency in artificial intelligence modeling
- Proficiency in cleaning and organizing data
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing, with faculty, staff, and supervisors
- Ability to communicate effectively about task deadlines and ability to complete on time while managing competing demands / assignments / deadlines. Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records and coordinate other tasks as required
- Experience working and communicating with sensitive populations, such as adolescents, alcohol/substance use populations
- Willingness and proven ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects
- Skill in communicating with others about sensitive behavioral issues, including risky driving behaviors, alcohol/drug misuse, and frequency of health-risking behaviors. Skill in speaking and writing to persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
