Position SummaryESA is actively seeking On‑Call Archaeological Field Technicians in Southern California. Candidates must be familiar working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, and knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region. A minimum of one year of field experience or equivalent academic experience in Southern California is required. Candidates must live within commuting distance to a Southern California ESA office and be open to travel for on‑site work.
WhoYou Are
- You are an effective team member with experience in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring, surveys, and documentation in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
- You hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, or related field.
- You have a demonstrated ability to use app‑based software for field recordation and mapping.
- You are familiar with working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, and knowledgeable of regional archaeological materials.
- You are open to travel as needed for projects; mileage and travel reimbursements will be provided as per the contract.
- You enjoy fieldwork, can walk long distances carrying a backpack, and can lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outdoors in remote, rural, urban, forested, arid, stream bank, and coastal/intertidal areas, and may work nights and weekends. You may participate in compliance monitoring and reporting for ongoing construction projects and work near heavy equipment.
- You possess a valid driver’s license and have experience driving 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles off‑road.
- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological and/or paleontological resources.
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel.
- Write and maintain daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including using electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
- Perform other ad‑hoc tasks as needed.

Pay Transparency (California)Hourly rate: $24.34 – $34.08 USD.
