Temporary Student Intern – Regulatory Compliance

The Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) is an independent special district serving central Orange County with a reputation for leading‑edge water management practices and sustainability programs. IRWD provides high‑quality drinking water, reliable sewage collection and treatment, recycled water programs, and urban runoff treatment to its customers.

Position Overview

Under general supervision, the intern will conduct research, data collection, and analysis in the Regulatory Compliance Department. The role includes field sample collection of water, wastewater, and recycled water, entry of regulatory data, review of new and existing regulations, use of software for data management, and preparation of technical reports and studies. Interns will receive hands‑on training emphasizing teamwork, independence, and technical skill development.

The internship is limited to 20 hours per week, in accordance with the intern’s academic schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform office and field research, data collection, and analysis related to regulatory compliance.
  • Utilize field instruments and equipment to measure and record physical water quality parameters and to collect water samples.
  • Shadow senior staff and train in a variety of tasks.
  • Compile, organize, and interpret data with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and studies on assigned subjects.
  • Conduct preliminary quality assurance review of field water quality data entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIMS).
  • Prepare documents, memos, and correspondence as required for project completion.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Follow district safety practices and attend relevant safety training.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Active enrollment as a student in an accredited institution at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Strong research methods and data collection skills, including statistical methods and report writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to work independently, read and interpret technical material, and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Basic arithmetic skills and keyboarding ability sufficient for data entry.
  • Good personal judgment, discretion, and ability to remain calm in crisis situations.
  • Physical ability to perform light to medium field work and to operate a motor vehicle.
Required Licenses / Certifications
  • Valid Class "C" California Driver’s License.
