Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience Junior Specialist

Position Overview

The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, seeks a Junior Specialist for research in the Translational Cognitive and Affective (TCAN) Laboratory.

Salary range:
The annual salary range for this position is $55,000 - $194,800. The hourly rate is $26.35 - $93.30. Pay is based on the UC salary scales determined by rank and step at appointment.

This is a 100%-time appointment for one year with the potential to renew annually. The role serves as a study coordinator for several newly funded and ongoing grant‑funded research projects directed by Dr. Cameron Carter. Projects include investigations of inflammatory factors in psychosis, MRI predictors of treatment response, effects of brain stimulation on cognition and symptoms, and optimization of cognitive tasks across diagnoses.

Projects use cognitive neuroscience methodologies such as electrophysiology (EEG), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study high‑level cognition in healthy adults and in individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. The position offers training in these data‑collection techniques and clinical interviewing.

The incumbent will coordinate research activities alongside a team of research assistants, handle multiple aspects of the study, and communicate with research participants, colleagues, and international collaborators.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, neuroimaging, or a related field.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Fluency in English for reading research protocols, documenting data, and communicating with participants.
• Exceptional record‑keeping, organizational, and time‑management skills, and ability to multi‑task.
• Ability to build and maintain rapport with research participants, colleagues, and international collaborators.
• Junior Specialists require a bachelor’s degree or equivalent research experience.
