Postdoctoral Researcher in FASER

The FASER Group at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position.

FASER (Forw Ard Search Expe Riment) is an experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) designed to search for new light and weakly interacting particles and to study high-energy neutrinos produced in LHC collisions. FASER has opened a new window into collider neutrino physics through the first observations and studies of neutrinos produced at a particle collider. Looking toward LHC Run 4 and the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the FASER Collaboration is developing an upgraded electronic neutrino detector to cope with the substantially higher luminosity and particle rates.

UCI is leading the development of a highly-segmented plastic scintillator detector with SiPM readout for the FASER neutrino detector upgrade, designed to provide electronic tracking and calorimetric measurements of neutrino interactions.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in the R&D and construction of a new plastic scintillator-and SiPM-based neutrino detector for the FASER experiment in preparation for LHC Run 4 and the HL-LHC era. The position will also involve related work in detector simulation, AI/ML software development, and data analysis within the FASER experiment.

Responsibilities will include leading the construction and assembly of FASER’s new plastic scintillator-and SiPM-based neutrino detector, integrating the detector electronics and readout systems, and contributing to detector testing, commissioning, and optimization. Experience with plastic scintillator-and SiPM-based detector systems is preferred.

UCI’s FASER group has played a leading role in the conception and development of FASER and its collider neutrino program and the UCI group is actively involved in developing next-generation neutrino detector technologies for FASER Run 4 and the HL-LHC era.

We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics and demonstrated expertise in both detector hardware and software/data analysis.

The position requires the ability to travel to CERN as needed.

For general information about this position, please contact Professors Jianming Bian, bianjm and Jonathan Feng, jlf.

We are reviewing applications as they are received. The position will remain open until it is filled.
