The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the UC Irvine School of Medicine anticipates occasional openings in the Specialist Series at the Junior, Assistant, Associate, and Full Specialist rank. Specialists are engaged in specialized research, professional activity, university and/or public service. They are expected to use professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions to the research enterprise and to achieve recognition in the professional and scientific community.
Specialists may participate in university and/or public service depending on funding source and position duties. Positions are dependent on extramural funding and are occasionally available throughout the year.
- Basic qualifications Applicant must possess a B.S., M.S., M.D., or Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Ophthalmology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or related fields.
- Junior Specialists Applicant should have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent research experience.
- Assistant Specialists Applicant should have a master's degree or equivalent experience and five years of expertise in the relevant specialization.
- Associate Specialists Applicant should have a master's degree or equivalent experience and five to ten years of expertise. Expected to have record of academic accomplishments, including published or in-press research and demonstrated record of university/public service.
- Full Specialists Applicant should have terminal degree or ten or more years of experience, significant record of academic accomplishments, professional recognition, and record of university/public service.

- Cover Letter – optional, introduces applicant to potential Principal Investigator/Faculty.
- Statement of Research – optional, describes past, present and future research direction.
- Misc / Additional – optional, copies of impactful peer reviewed publications.
