Position: Assistant Adjunct Professor - Physiology & Biophysics/ Adeline Yen Mah Vaccine Center

Position Overview

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a non‑senate Assistant Adjunct Professor to participate in research, teaching, mentorship, and public service in an academic medical center environment. The position may include membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, providing eligibility for additional compensation. Salary range: $93,700 – $121,400, with the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will manage the Lipid Nanoparticle Core Facility, interface with the UCI GMP Facility, collaborate with a large group of scientists in the School of Medicine and across the UCI campus, develop extramurally funded research programs, and provide leadership in genetic medicine and vaccine research. The department offers opportunities for research, teaching, mentorship to medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Scientific expertise in genetic medicines and nanoparticle science.
  • Extensive research experience in immunology and vaccines.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness across multiple organ systems and in collaborative educational environments.
  • Experience in the biophysics and formulation of liposomes and lipid nanoparticles, including production of mRNA and DNA lipid nanoparticle systems for gene delivery and expression in cultured cells and in vivo.
  • Expertise in characterizing the bioavailability and biodistribution of synthetic nanoparticle gene delivery systems in vivo.
  • Prior experience supervising graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and providing training, consultation, and service support to others.

  • Strong publication record in high‑impact journals.
  • Expertise in both technological development and biological/biomedical applications.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring.
