Facilities Management is responsible for the effective operation of Irvine campus infrastructure including, buildings, grounds and utilities and central plant operations; for providing a safe, functionally suitable and aesthetic environment in support of academic, research and public service programs of the University. Providing comprehensive management of campus facilities requires the employment of approximately 325 personnel of both union represented and non-represented positions ranging in classification from custodians and groundskeepers to more technical skilled crafts such as electricians and plumbers, as well as professional design staff, engineers, and a tiered leadership team of approximately 30.

These services cover more than 150 buildings of approximately 46 million gross square feet, and 1,475 acres of grounds. Facilities Management has an annual operating budget exceeding $80 million in expenditures, with operating funds of $30 million and $15 million for reimbursable campus activities. Also manages a portfolio of major infrastructure and renovation projects totaling $200M.

Responsibilities

Under supervision, performs and directs others in repairing, maintaining and installing both manual and automatic irrigated systems and related equipment, including but not limited to hydraulic and electrically operated irrigation controllers. Inspects systems, repairs and adjusts controllers, automatic and manual valves and complex sprinkler head. Knowledge of Maxi Com central control system.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, both manual and automatic.
  • Knowledge and skill to operate commonly used grounds equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill to repair, install and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Skill in operating trenchers, tractors, roto-tillers and other commonly used larger pieces of power driven grounds equipment.
  • Knowledge and ability to determine material requirements and estimate project costs.
  • Ability to be flexible and constantly adjust to changing priorities.
  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
  • Problem-solving skills and sound judgement.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically.
  • Must be able to consistently perform job duties.
  • 1-3 years experience installing, repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting manual and automatic irrigation systems and related equipment.

Driver's License:

  • Required to hold a valid drivers license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Preferred:

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to understand Departmental and U.C.I. policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop short and medium range irrigation development and design plans.
  • Ability and skill to check own work/documentation for completion and accuracy of data.
  • Knowledge and ability to coordinate preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to understand and apply University and departmental policies and procedures.

Special Conditions:

  • Must possess California Driver License and participate in DMV Pull Notice program.
  • Must be available for on-call assignments or alternate work schedule. Must be willing to work weekends.
