Pay Range and Salary

Pay Range: $27.16 - $42.74 Hourly.

Starting pay rate: $27.16 per hour $56,492.80 per year + comprehensive benefits package.

* This position is full-time, at-will and budgeted for 14 months with the approximate program period of late October 2026 through December 2027. Post-program employment opportunities may be available, but are not guaranteed.

The Community Development Field Services Assistant plays a pivotal role in maintaining our city's high standards by providing administrative and technical support to the Code Enforcement and Inspection teams, performing field work, and delivering exceptional customer service to our residents.

Apprenticeship Program

The One Irvine Workforce Apprenticeship Program is funded through the California Volunteers Youth Service Corps grant. In addition to employment, apprentices receive specialized professional development and mentorship, and participate in innovative trainings, all while supporting some of Irvine's most important initiatives. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain on-the-job training, experience the benefits of public service, and invest in your future.

Eligibility Requirements

This program is grant funded and has specific eligibility requirements, including:

  • Participants must be between 18-30 years old on their first day of service, estimated to be October 2026.
  • Priority will be given to Irvine residents who meet at least two of the following:
    • Are unemployed or out of school
    • Are low-income
    • May have difficulty finding employment
    • Are first generation college students
    • Were in or are transitioning from foster care
    • Are or were engaged with a mental health or substance abuse system
    • Are or were justice-involved
    • Are experiencing or have experienced housing instability
    • Have not participated in an Ameri Corps program
Your Impact
  • Public Outreach:
    Educate and inform stakeholders, including homeowners, tenants, businesses, city departments, and external agencies about codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Administrative Support:
    Prioritize tasks and projects to ensure efficient daily operations within the department.
  • Complaint Intake:
    Conduct initial interviews with individuals reporting potential code violations and determine appropriate next steps.
  • Field Support:
    Assist code enforcement officers during on-site inspections to identify code violations.
  • Technical Inspections:
    Support inspectors in evaluating structures, grading, landscaping, and building systems for compliance with codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Permit Review:
    Assist in reviewing construction permits, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances, seeking guidance from senior staff on complex technical matters.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of customer service experience or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.

  • Experience with general code enforcement compliance, investigations, or building inspection.

The Community Development Field Services Assistant is a working title of the Code Enforcement Technician classification.

The Process

The selection process will include an interview and a background investigation prior to appointment. This recruitment may establish an eligibility list to fill future positions in similar and/or lower classifications within the organization.
