PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

Assist the classroom teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students, including implementation of classroom programs such as self‑help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Qualifications

Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate
High School Diploma or GED

Special Knowledge / Skills

Ability to work well with children
Proficient communication skills
Proficiency with basic computer applications
Knowledge of general office equipment
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred in some settings

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

Assist teachers in providing modified instruction for ESL students in inclusive settings.

Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.

Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom.

Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.

Assist in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.

Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.

Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of classroom equipment.

Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as required.

Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Serve as an interpreter when one is needed.

Assist students with activities of personal care, including diapering, toileting, and/or dressing.

Perform any other duties assigned by the Campus Principal.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent movement from one classroom to another; frequent standing, stooping, bending; may be required to lift up to 30 pounds without assistance.

Safety:
Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and district policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
