Primary
Purpose:
Assist the special education teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities, including personal care, self‑help, behavior management, and instruction.
Minimum
Education/Certification:
Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate;
High School Diploma or GED.
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Ability to work well with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Minimum Experience: Experience working with children/students, parents, or persons with disabilities.
Major Responsibilities and Duties- Maintain confidentiality.
- Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish them to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground and community settings.
- Assist teacher in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required.
- Assist special needs students with individual tasks as required, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene.
- Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention.
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in‑service and/or teacher direction.
- Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction.
- Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies.
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Equipment Used: Copier, facsimile, computer/peripherals, adaptive equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Working ConditionsMental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control, exercise reasoning and problem‑solving skill while under stress; must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively. May be required to lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning. May be exposed to biological hazards. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling. Occasional irregular hours.
Safety: Contribute to prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and district policy, wearing PPE as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor.
