Position eligible for a Letter of Reasonable Assurance
Primary PurposeAssist special education teacher to provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, personal care needs including self‑help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher.
QualificationsMinimum Education /Certification
Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate
High School Diploma or GED
Special Knowledge/Skills- Ability to work well with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Experience working with children/students, parents, or persons with disabilities
Major Responsibilities and Duties- Maintain confidentiality
- Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
- Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community
- Assist teacher in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required
- Assist special needs students with individual tasks as may be required including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene
- Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in‑service and/or teacher direction
- Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction
- Keep teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
- Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned

Working ConditionsMental and physical demands:
Maintain emotional control, exercise reasoning and problem‑solving skills while under stress, demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written), interpret procedures, analyze data, lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair, assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Possible exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, communicable diseases. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Occasional irregular hours.
Contribute to prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and district policy, practicing principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
