IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Principal
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Reports To: Deputy Superintendent of School Leadership
Pay Grade: As approved by Board of Trustees
- 220 days (Early Childhood)
- 220 days (Elementary)
- 225 days (Secondary)
Approved Date: September 2013
Primary
Purpose:
The principal shall direct and manage the instructional program and supervise operations at the campus level, provide instructional leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service, direct the implementation of District policies and instructional programs, and manage the operation of all campus activities.
- Master's Degree
- Valid Texas Administrator's Certificate
- At least three (3) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher
- Prior experience in instructional leadership roles
- Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
- Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
- Strong communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Instructional Management:
- Administer and integrate all instructional programs
- Plan, implement, and evaluate the curriculum on a systematic basis
- Provide instructional resources to support the accomplishment of instructional goals
- Evaluate and recommend improvements in the design and implementation of instructional programs
- School/Organizational Climate:
- Provide an environment conducive to learning
- Reinforce desired behaviors for students and staff
- Establish and maintain an environment conducive to positive staff morale
- School/Organizational Improvement:
- Establish through a collaborative process a vision for a campus mission
- Develop campus performance objectives and an improvement plan through collaboration
- Develop, maintain, and use information systems necessary to address campus performance objectives including all academic excellence indicators
- Personnel Management:
- Interview, select, and orient new staff
- Recommend employment, transfer, retention, and dismissal of staff (see board policy)
- Define expectations for staff performance
- Use developmental supervision with all staff
- Develop leadership among staff
- Delegate personnel management functions as appropriate
- Complete personnel management reports in a timely manner
- Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management:
- Develop budget based on program needs, estimated enrollment, projected staffing, and other fiscal needs
- Implement programs within budgeted parameters
- Comply with all regulations regarding fiscal management
- Manage use and maintenance of facilities to provide a safe and clean campus
- Provide required reports for all school operations (attendance, funds accounting, payroll, transportation)
- Student Management:
- Develop a student management system that encourages positive student behavior and enhances the school climate
- Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and discipline is appropriate and equitable
- Communicate student management expectations to parents and community; encourage parent participation
- School/Community Relations:
- Articulate the school's mission to the community and solicit support
- Demonstrate awareness of school/community needs and initiate activities to meet these needs
- Promote a positive image of the school and maintain positive relationships with parents and community
- Involve parents and other community members in school activities as required
- Professional Growth and Development:
- Use assessment instruments and professional development programs to improve performance
- Provide leadership in addressing current educational issues
- Attend professional development activities
- Abide by the Professional Code of Ethics
- Academic Excellence Indicators and Campus Performance Objectives:
- Provide leadership that emphasizes high expectations that result in student success
- Examples of measurements of student success include: drop‑out rate, graduation rate, advanced course enrollment, percentage of advanced transcripts, honors transcripts, honor roll rate, failure rate, student assessments (norm‑reference tests, state assessment results, LAP3, STAAR results)
