The engineer who fills this position will be responsible for collaborating as part of a team on the design, development, analysis and testing of new software‑based systems within the LEADER product family.

- Provide maintenance support for existing products.
- Develop requirements for the design of energy management/train control systems.
- Prepare technical proposals, including clause‑by‑clause comments to customer specifications.
- Perform system integration.
- Prepare system‑level Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
- Assist with the development of verification and validation test procedures.
- Assist with the preparation and delivery of technical presentations to customers in support of sales.
- Troubleshoot complex system problems and identify root causes / corrective actions.
- Perform and participate in design reviews.
- Adhere to all NYAB development processes.
- Interface with other departments, as necessary.
- Must understand and support all Quality, Product Safety, and Health/Safety/Environmental/Energy policies.
- Must understand and adhere to all relevant statutory or regulatory compliance obligations.
- Must understand, support, and adhere to the Integrated Management System policies, procedures, and instructions.
- Must understand and support relevant key performance indicators (KPIs), as defined in the goal tree.
- Basic understanding of Mechanical, Pneumatic, and Electrical Systems.
- Experience with software‑based control systems.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Use of the Standard Microsoft Office Suite for communication and documentation.
The employee’s responsibilities will involve working at a computer terminal the majority of the time; however, there will be field work at the Rail Roads at times up to 10% annually.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of an office work environment position. In addition, there will be field work, and when there is, the person must be able to climb onto and off a locomotive. Must be able to carry a backpack with equipment and tools up to 25 lbs.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field required.
Education and Experience
- Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field required.
- 6+ years of directly relevant experience
- Familiarity with the Software Development Lifecycle.
- Familiarity/Experience with Control Topologies
- Proficient use of Unix/Linux‑like environments.
- Experience with C/C++ development.
- Experience in Rail or transportation systems software development strongly preferred.
- Development for safety‑rated systems (SIL)
