Responsibilities include inspecting a variety of buildings for compliance with building codes and other ordinances; maintaining detailed written records of inspections; responding to questions and complaints from the public, city staff, contractors, architects and engineers; preparing cases about dangerous structures to present to the Building and Standards Commission; studying code and ordinance changes, attending educational seminars, and staying current with construction trends and inspection procedural innovations.
Duties involve working both in an office environment and conducting on-site inspections.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent plus some college or vocational training in a related field.
- Two years of inspections or related experience required.
- Strong construction background in areas such as framing, electrical, plumbing or construction management may be accepted in lieu of inspections experience.
- For Building Inspector lower range, must primarily conduct electrical inspections (TDLR electrical license preferred).
- Must have, or obtain within a specified timeframe, International Building, Residential and Energy Conservation Code certifications and a valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
- To be hired as or advance to the higher pay range, must acquire within a specified timeframe a State of Texas Plumbing Inspector license, International Plumbing Code certification and other applicable licenses and certifications.
- Bilingual (English / Spanish) skills are beneficial.
PAY GRADE GG17 / FULL PAY RANGE $25.45 - $35.88 PER HOUR ($52,944 - $74,640 ANNUALLY)
PAY GRADE GG20 / FULL PAY RANGE $29.47 - $41.52 PER HOUR ($61,308 - $86,376 ANNUALLY)
